EMDR stands for Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitization.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a treatment for reducing the impact of historic events on current life. It replicates the eye movements of REM sleep to assist the brain in processing and reducing its arousal state response to the event.
Imagine your memory as a book. Trauma rips pages out, and haphazardly puts the book back together and on a shelf. EMDR takes it down, smooths out and puts the pages back in the right places, and puts it back on the shelf. The story is still there- EMDR doesn't erase the memory, but reduces its impact on your emotions.
