The 5-Minute Reset: A Gratitude Ritual for the Woman Who Has No Time

In our last conversation, we talked about reclaiming gratitude from the trap of public expectation. We established that for us, it’s not a performance of appreciation, but a private act of self-preservation. The immediate, valid response I hear from my clients—the CEOs, the artists, the leaders—is, “Burgandy, that sounds wonderful. But when?

When your calendar is a color-coded battlefield and your mind is running a thousand-tab browser, the idea of adding one more thing, even a “good” thing, can feel like a lead weight. I see you. I understand that your time is your most precious, non-renewable resource.

So, let’s not add another task. Let’s install a system. A short, sustainable, and neurologically potent ritual that takes no more than five minutes and is designed specifically for the woman who has no time to spare. It’s called the 5-Minute Journal, and it’s one of the most powerful tools for building the habit of wellness amidst a demanding life.

The Be True Crown Straightening Approach: Habit Formation and Self-Mastery

The power of this practice lies in its structure. It’s not about finding an hour for navel-gazing; it’s about leveraging five minutes to strategically bookend your day with intention and reflection. This approach is rooted in two core principles of the Be True philosophy: Habit Formation for Wellness Routines and the journey toward Self-Mastery.

For a new behavior to stick, it has to be sustainable. Five minutes is sustainable. By linking this brief practice to something you already do—while your coffee brews, before you check your email, after you brush your teeth—you create a “habit stack” that makes consistency almost effortless.

This isn’t just about feeling good. This is about taking control. Self-mastery, for the woman who is constantly seen, is the ultimate act of self-preservation. It’s the ability to regulate your internal narrative and anchor your sense of self, independent of public opinion. This five-minute ritual is your daily training ground.

The Morning Ritual: Setting Your Intention

How you start your day sets the tone for everything that follows. The morning prompts are proactive. They shift you from a defensive posture—bracing for the world’s demands—to a creative one, where you are the architect of your day.

  • “I am grateful for…” (List 3 things): This is your cognitive warm-up. Your brain has a natural negativity bias, a built-in scanner for threats. This prompt forces it to scan for the good. Be specific. “My family” is nice. “The way my son’s face lit up when he told me about his dream” is powerful. Specificity activates the reward centers in your brain, releasing dopamine and serotonin, the neurochemicals of pleasure and contentment.
  • “What would make today great?” (List 3 things): This is an act of agency. Instead of just reacting to your calendar, you identify three actionable things that will make the day feel like a win. This could be a task (“Finish the first draft of the proposal”), an experience (“Take a 10-minute walk without my phone”), or a personal challenge (“Transcend my impatience in the 2 p.m. meeting”). You are writing the story of your day before it happens.
  • “Daily Affirmations. I am…”: This is where you regulate your internal narrative. For the woman of color battling imposter syndrome and internalized stereotypes, this is a moment of radical self-definition. This is where you write your own truth. Instead of letting the world tell you who you are, you tell yourself. Try affirmations that speak directly to your experience: “I reject societal standards that don’t align with me.” “I won’t allow racism to distract me from my greatness.” “I deserve to move through life with ease.”

The Evening Ritual: Reflection and Release

The evening prompts are reflective. They are designed to help you process the day, gather evidence for your own competence, and emotionally down-regulate before sleep.

  • “3 amazing things that happened today”: This is your highlight reel. On a day filled with challenges, your brain will want to fixate on the one thing that went wrong. This prompt forces a recount. It trains your mind to find the wins, no matter how small—a productive meeting, an unexpected text from a friend, a moment of genuine laughter. This is you, building a tangible record of your own success.
  • “How could I have made today even better?”: This is the anti-perfectionism prompt. This is not a space for self-criticism. It is a space for compassionate, non-judgmental reflection. It’s where you look at a misstep not as a failure, but as data. “I could have set a clearer boundary in that conversation.” “I could have taken a break when I felt my energy dip.” This practice turns setbacks into actionable lessons, fostering a growth mindset and preventing you from carrying yesterday’s mistakes into tomorrow.

This simple, structured practice is more than a journal. It is a daily, five-minute commitment to your own well-being. It is the evidence log you bring to court when your inner critic tries to prosecute you. It is the private, sacred space where you define yourself before the world does. It is the small hinge that swings the big door of a life lived with intention, agency, and a deeply anchored sense of self. It is how you straighten your own crown, every single day.
