Reframed Law 4: Make Rest Satisfying

A client, a powerful community organizer, came to me feeling deeply ashamed. "I took a nap on Saturday," she said, her voice low. "For a whole hour. And all I could think about were the emails I wasn't answering and the strategy document I should have been writing." She used a habit tracker, but it was filled with things like "Wrote 1,000 words" and "Completed 5 grant proposals." There was no box to check for "Honored my exhaustion." She felt like a failure for needing to rest.

This is the insidious logic of Grind Culture. It's a system, deeply rooted in capitalism and white supremacy, that has brainwashed us into believing our worth is directly proportional to our productivity. For Black women, this is compounded by the historical expectation that we will labor endlessly without complaint. This makes rest feel not just unproductive, but like a moral failing. Clear's Fourth Law, "Make it Satisfying," uses tools like habit trackers to reinforce productive behaviors. We will reimagine this final law to rewire our brains and make rest our most satisfying achievement.

Let's apply the "Truth vs. Experience" framework to this final, crucial law.

  • The Situation: It's 6 PM, you've finished your official workday, but you still have a long list of "should-dos" for your career, family, or community. You are exhausted.
  • The Emotional Experience: You feel a wave of guilt for being tired. You think, "If I just push for two more hours, I'll feel so much better getting this done." The thought of stopping feels lazy and irresponsible. You see rest as quitting.
  • The Empowering Truth: Rest is not the opposite of work; it is a vital part of the work. It is a form of resistance against a system designed to exploit your energy. Rest is not laziness—it is a non-negotiable achievement, a radical act of self-preservation, and the foundation of your sustainable power.
  • The Behavioral Shift: The old habit is to track your productivity. The new, reimagined habit is to track your restoration. Flip the script on your habit tracker. Create a streak for "Days I took a real lunch break" or "Weekends I did not check work email." When you log off on time, give yourself an immediate, satisfying reward—put on your favorite song, light a candle, or simply savor the feeling of choosing yourself. Seeing that chain of rest grow provides a visual hit of dopamine, reinforcing the idea that your well-being is the ultimate win.

Your true system is not a productivity engine designed to extract more from you. It is a holistic practice of self-advocacy and radical self-preservation. By making rest satisfying, you are actively rewiring your brain to celebrate restoration over depletion. You are building a system designed not just to help you succeed, but to help you last.

Building a new system where rest is a celebrated achievement is a revolutionary act that goes against everything grind culture has taught us. This is deep, transformative work. If you're ready to build your own system for sustainable power, we are here to support you. At Be True Counseling, our individual therapy, online community, and podcast provide a space to practice this new way of being with expert, culturally competent guidance.
