As March draws to a close, we are looking back at a month defined by the heavy mantle of leadership. At Be True Counseling, we’ve spent the last few weeks exploring the psychological landscape of those who stand at the front of the line—the "Firsts" who pave the way and the "Onlys" who hold the ground.
From the halls of Philadelphia’s City Hall to the revolutionary docks of Boston and the rugged marshes of the Eastern Shore, the lessons of this month have been clear: Leadership is a geography of grit, but it must not be a landscape of burnout.
1. The Modern "First" (Mayor Cherelle Parker): We explored the "Glass Cliff"—the phenomenon of being appointed to lead in a crisis—and the psychological armor required to protect your "Philly Shine" amidst Representative Exhaustion.
2. The "Sacrificial First" (Crispus Attucks & Minnesota): We sat with the weight of the front line. We connected the legacy of 1770 to the recent unrest in Minnesota, discussing how Collective Trauma and Hyper-Vigilance impact the nervous systems of leaders who act as shields for their communities.
3. The "Visionary First" (Harriet Tubman): I shared my personal journey to Minty’s birthplace, exploring how being "lent out" to difficult systems can actually help us master the map. We learned that the "cracks" in our history are often where our Internal Authority is born.
Being the "First" is a historical milestone, but it should not be a psychological death sentence. Whether you are leading a city, a corporate team, or a neighborhood movement, your most radical act of leadership is maintaining your own humanity. You cannot lead others to freedom if you are a prisoner to perfectionism or hyper-vigilance. As we move into April, we invite you to put down the "Steely Mask" and pick up the tools of Resilient Flexibility.
Let’s continue to build leadership models that value our life and joy as much as our sacrifice.
After exploring the cost of leadership this month, join us in April as we tackle the invisible labor of the "Second Shift." We’ll show you how to finally drop the "Superwoman Cape," reclaim your equitable rest, and set boundaries that preserve your energy for the spotlight, the living room and the neighborhood.
