Inclusive Photography 101: Making Everyone Look Good for Loving Day

Our modern phone cameras are incredible, but their underlying algorithms are still low-key biased. When a multiracial or diverse family stands in the same frame, standard autofocus gets totally confused. It forces a binary choice: overexpose lighter skin until it's washed out, or plunge darker skin into total shadow.

In a beautifully diverse family ecosystem, your photos shouldn’t be the battleground for which of us is cute. Culturally competent love means learning how to actively fight the algorithm so that every member of your family shines perfectly in the frame.

As women, our relationship with visibility is complex. Whether you are navigating corporate boardrooms or sharing deeply vulnerable parts of your soul as an artist, musician, or writer, you are already tuned into what “they think of us.” You spend all day wearing the unbothered gaze, and not letting any cracks show. When the visual tools we use fail to capture our full depth, it sends a subtle, harmful message that we don't fit. Reclaiming how we are captured in a photograph is a radical act of self-validation.

You spend your entire day adjusting your energy to hold space for others professionally. When you step into the frame with the people you love, you shouldn't have to dim your light or settle for being a shadow. True authority means demanding a baseline—and a camera setting—that sees your full depth.

When you put your art out into the world, your face and your image are part of the story you tell. That “I don’t like what I see” feeling for a lot of us comes from the tech not aligning with our realities, yet we internalize it. You are both a powerful visionary and a vulnerable storyteller; your media should accurately reflect the fire in your spirit and the true richness of your skin.

Inclusive Photography 101: Your Mobile Toolkit

Do this the next time you are taking a picture with diversely melanated folks so we can all look good:

  • Tip 1: Stop Tapping on Faces. When your family is in the frame, do not lock focus on a single person’s face. Instead, tap your screen directly on the space between your different skin tones. This forces the camera to read the entire gradient of light.
  • Tip 2: Slide the Exposure Down. Once you tap that center space, a sun icon will appear. Slide the exposure slider down just a fraction. This simple adjustment protects the highlights on lighter skin while preserving the rich, warm, subtle details of darker skin tones.
  • Tip 3: Ban the Direct Phone Flash. Direct mobile flash creates harsh, ashy reflections and muddy shadows on melanated skin. Turn off the flash entirely and rely on soft, natural light—like standing near a window or moving into open outdoor shade. Catch the Golden Hour, y’all!

The Permanent Fix: iPhone Photographic Styles

Want your iPhone to automatically capture richer, more accurate skin tones? Use Photographic Styles. Unlike a standard filter, this setting makes smart, subtle adjustments to light and color, ensuring skin looks true-to-life in every photo you take.

How to set it up:

  1. Pick a Style: Open Settings > Camera > Photographic Styles. Skip "Standard" and try Rich Contrast, Gold, or Amber.
  2. Adjust the Grid:
  • Tone: Drag down (toward negative) to deepen shadows and fix "ashy" looks.
  • Warmth: Drag right (toward positive) to add natural color.
  1. Save: Tap the checkmark. Your phone will now use these settings for every shot.

Pro-Tip: In Settings > Camera > Formats, select High Efficiency. This lets you adjust or remove the style later in the Photos app if needed.
