Hi again, it's Burgandy from Be True Counseling in Philadelphia. We've talked about what overwhelm feels like and how it can really take a toll on us. But here's the liberating truth I've come to understand: managing stress isn't a luxury; it's the key to unlocking yourself from that cycle. When we consciously make time for ourselves and engage in self-care habits, something amazing happens. We start to regain control – not just over our schedules, but over our mindset, over the stories we tell ourselves. We become kinder, more compassionate – both to ourselves and to the people around us. Remember that treat my husband brought home? In a balanced state, it's just a treat. No guilt, no judgment, just a moment of enjoyment.
So, how do we actually step off that relentless treadmill of life? It starts with intentionally carving out space for ourselves, even if it feels impossible right now. Trust me, even small pockets of time can make a difference. Here are a few things that have made a real impact on my own journey of managing overwhelm:
Get some sunlight: That big, bright star in the sky isn't just pretty to look at; it plays a vital role in our overall well-being. Sunlight helps regulate your body's natural rhythms, which can have a positive impact on your mood and sleep. (Want to learn more? Check out this article on the benefits of sunlight.
Go outside: Even a short burst of nature can do absolute wonders for your stress levels and give your mood a lift. Seriously, step away from your screens and just breathe some fresh air. (Harvard Researchers agree

Move your body: You don't need to sign up for a marathon (unless you want to!). Even a gentle walk around the block can help release tension that builds up when you're stressed and can significantly reduce those overwhelmed feelings. The Mayo Clinic breaks down the awesome connection between exercise and stress relief:
Connect with others: Don't try to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders alone! Lean on your people – your friends, your family, your support network. Having those connections makes navigating tough times and managing stress so much easier. Research highlights just how important social connection is for coping.
Play! Seriously. Remember what it felt like to just have fun and experience pure joy? Whether it's dusting off a board game, kicking a ball around, or just doing something silly, incorporating play into your life can be incredibly restorative for your mental health and a fantastic way to reduce stress.
These might seem like small things, but trust me, consistently incorporating even one or two of these into your routine can start to shift things. You deserve to step off that treadmill and find a little more breathing room.
Which one of these suggestions feels like something you could realistically incorporate into your week? Pick one and try it out! Share your experience in the comments – I'd love to hear how it goes!
